Maplewood Academy to operate Popcorn Wagon

Maplewood Academy plans to operate the Popcorn Wagon this summer. Details about its hours of operation will be
available next month.

The Popcorn Wagon was purchased by downtown businesses in the 1990s and fully refurbished two years ago. Its location at the southwest corner of Library Square is known as Popcorn Plaza.

Downtown developments
Wild Prairie Coin & Collectibles opened within Main Street Antiques, 122 Main St. N. The owner offers 23 years’ experience; he buys and sells U.S. gold and silver coins, currency, foreign coins, scrap gold and silver, quality carnival glass, pre-1975 sports cards and sets.

Hutchinson Downtown Association’s Farmers Market returns for the season on Wed., June 3. Watch for this popular market 3 to 6 p.m. Wednesdays and 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays at the corner of Washington Ave. E. and Adams St. in the VFW parking lot.

Downtown businesses that have yet to send in membership dues for 2009, please do so as soon as possible. Money generated by dues helps the HDA support a variety of programs and events — many coming this summer — in downtown Hutchinson:
• Farmers Market
• Picnic in the Park
• Popcorn Wagon
• Downtown flower pots
• Main Street Christmas Trolley Rides
• Water Carnival donations

Planning continues for a “downtown gateway” park on the empty Main St. lot next to Girl Scout Park (formerly Hutchinson Pet Hospital). Plans include a possible mural painting, map and kiosk or other welcoming attractions.

The yard at Hutchinson Utilities historic plant No. 1 at the intersection of Main St. N. and State Highway 7 is getting spruced up this summer. Watch for improvements to the parking area alongside, plantings and landscaping. This yard is also part of the “gateway” into downtown, and improvements here will complement downtown streetscape upgrades.

The Hutchinson Downtown Association Board of Directors meets monthly. The next meeting is 7:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 23 at City Center. All members are invited to attend.

The Hutchinson Economic Development Authority offers downtown businesses several incentives designed to encourage continued vitality and investment in the downtown area, including sign and awning grant programs, storefront revitalization matching grants and a commercial rehabilitation loan program.
